Volunteering is something which has recently become a large part of my life. I completed a five week placement in a Primary School and loved it so much that I decided to continue there on a part time basis. For me, it isn't the job itself where the satisfaction is received, it's the people who you work with and the children in the school. They sort of become more of a large family to you, they are therefore you when you need them, and in response you hold the same duty of care towards them.
Teaching isn't simply a job.
If placement taught me one thing, it was that teaching is never simply just a job. Teaching does not just take place in the school, it becomes a form of lifestyle. I've noticed that there are many teachers who are forever concious about their pupils, about lesson plans and what creative methods can be used in order to make sure their pupils learn what they are supposed to. With this comes willpower and determination in every teacher, as every teacher has the desire to ensure that their pupils succeed, and reach their true potentials. It is this drive which has partially inspired me to become a teacher. Working in the teaching environment for only a short period of time, I have observed the pupils and the progress which they have made (and this has been tremendous).
On the whole... I love my volunteering job. I know that it's only a part-time thing, as I have work and University to attend, but I wouldn't change it for the world. Sometimes, I have days where I feel as though I'm too tired to function and embrace the world, but don't we all feel a little like that at times? This volunteering has taught me so many things about where I stand in life right now, and where abouts I may end up at the end of this whole University rollercoaster.
